Concealed hinges, also known as European hinges or cup hinges, are commonly used on cabinet and furniture doors. They are designed to hide the hinge mechanism when the door is closed, achieving a clean, modern look. There are various types of concealed hinges, but the following three are the most common:
Inset Hinges: These hinges are used for doors that are set into the cabinet frame, so when the door is closed, it is flush with the front of the cabinet. Inset hinges are typically completely hidden when the door is closed, making them suitable for traditional or classic cabinet designs.
Overlay Hinges: Designed for doors that cover the cabinet frame when closed, overlay hinges are mounted inside the door and frame, hiding the hinge from view when the door is closed. These are commonly used in modern cabinet designs.
Half-Inset or Half-Overlay Hinges: Used when the door is partially set into and partially covers the cabinet frame, these hinges are a combination of the previous two types. The door sits within the frame but also slightly overlaps it, providing a smooth transition between the door and frame. These hinges are suitable for a variety of cabinet styles.
Adjustability: Many concealed hinges allow for adjustments in multiple directions (up, down, left, right, depth) to achieve perfect alignment.
Soft-Close Mechanism: Some hinges include a built-in mechanism to slow down the door as it closes, preventing it from slamming shut.
Angle Adjustment: The door opening angle can be adjusted, helping to prevent the door from hitting adjacent objects or for aesthetic purposes.
Concealed hinges are typically installed by creating a cup-shaped recess in the door and frame using a router, into which the hinge cup is mounted. They provide a smooth and unobtrusive appearance, making them very popular in modern kitchen and bathroom cabinets, as well as furniture design.
